Grand County, Colorado is the epicenter of an unprecidented outbreak of the Mountain Pine Beetle and witness to the devastation these rice-sized creatures are leaving behind.  Entire forests throughout the state are dying or already dead.  In fact, the U.S. Forest service has stated that nearly every mature Lodgepole Pine in Colorado will be dead by 2013!  It's a sobering fact.  One that poses many problems for land owners and residents throughout the state.  One word everyone around this area constantly has in the back of their minds:  Fire.

 

Once you notice the needles on a Lodgepole turning red, it's already too late.  The beetles have done their damage, destroying the tree's ability to move water and nutrients throughout it's structure.  The beetles breed, move on to the next tree and repeat the process.  Affected trees quickly become dry and brittle and in these large numbers, vastly increase the chances for catastrophic wildfire throughout the forests.
